our history

GCI

Government College Ibadan (GCI) was established on 28 February 1929 on the hills of Apata Ganga, Ibadan, as part of colonial Nigeria’s effort to expand quality secondary education.

Over the decades, GCI has grown into one of Nigeria’s premier boys’ schools, renowned for its academic excellence and for producing generations of distinguished leaders and professionals.

GCIOBA

The Government College Ibadan Old Boys’ Association (GCIOBA) was founded on 18 December 1934 by 14 alumni and four British staff. Since then, it has grown into a global network with chapters across Nigeria and in regions including Europe, North America, South Africa, and Australia.

Our Leadership Team

Our leaders are committed Old Boys, working together to strengthen connections, uphold GCI’s legacy, and support our community across Australia and New Zealand.

GCIOBA Australia & New Zealand Branch

It is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I serve as the foundation Chairman of the newly established GCI Old Boys’ Association (GCIOBA) Australia & New Zealand Branch. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to adding value to each member, giving back to our alma mater, and strengthening the institution that helped shape us.

Our branch is aligned with the goals of the National Executive Committee of the parent body, working to uplift Government College Ibadan and maintain its position among the top secondary schools in Nigeria. With a forward-looking vision, the Association serves as a platform to share memories, uphold values, network and make a tangible impact on our school: “Built on the Rock”.

Our mission is to make meaningful contributions to the academic, infrastructural, and professional advancement of GCI. We aim to support dedicated staff, inspire and empower students through mentorship, provide resources, and create opportunities for holistic development, both physical and mental.

As we embark on this journey, we do so with humility, unity of purpose, and a strong sense of responsibility. We remain grateful for the privilege of a quality education that has shaped our lives and we are determined to uphold that legacy, helping GCI regain its past glory and maintain the highest standards of knowledge and character for the students.

Since our inaugural meeting in July 2025, membership has continued to grow, with more class sets joining to build awareness and momentum. We look forward to engaging in activities that celebrate the culture and traditions of our prestigious school, while creating lasting value for our members and Alma Mater
